Beside O² World and the Velodrom the The Max Schmeling Hall in Prenzlauer Berg is one of the largest venues in Berlin. It is used today for sport events, concerts, gala shows and political congresses.
Until Germany applied for the Olympic Games in 2000 the hall was planned as a pure boxing hall. In 1996 the hall even has been named after the famous German boxer Max Schmeling. After the committee rejected the application the hall has been transformed into a multifunctional hall.
A particularity of the hall is its photovoltaics system on top of the roof. By the surface of 1749 m² and its 1064 modules the system has the capacity to produce 250kW of electrical power. By this it is one of the biggest solar collectors on a public building in Berlin.
